I just returned from a trip to Japan and Thailand where Christian imagery is at the minimum, and where worshippers are reading the mind of the Buddha instead. It is extremely refreshing to encounter a world where one is presented with the here and now of
life (living in the moment) rather than a sprint to the distance of an after-world. After all, we need to solve problems on the road we travel before the great freeway in the sky.
Buddhas line up in the temples and smile or smirk or just lie there reclining and enjoying. It seems a happier alternative to death on the cross.
